Delta GEMS: Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully
A natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of the highly successful "Dr. Betty Shabaaz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow", Delta Gems was created to "catch the dreams" of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the frame work to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks thatdevelop a "CAN DO" attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:
* To instill the need to excel academically; * To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success; * To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures-high school and beyond; and * To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
The Delta GEMS framework is composed of five major components (Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service, and Infinitely Complete), forming a road map for college and career planning. Topics within the five major components are designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth.

The Germany Alumnae Chapter’s Delteen program was a community based mentorship service project for female teenagers, Grades 7-12, throughout Germany. The primary objective of the Delteen program is to scaffold the development of female teenagers and to increase their awareness of women’s issues.
The Delteen program was designed for female teenagers enrolled in the seventh through twelfth grades in a Department of Defense Dependents School. The Delteen programs were active in the following areas: Heidelberg, Hessen, Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Wuerzburg.
Each Delteen group met monthly in their perspective areas. Throughout the academic school year they participated in workshops focusing on academic excellence, social etiquette, career development, health and safety, self-esteem awareness, community service projects, and fundraisers. They also participated in the “The Real World...what are you doing?” program to help prepare for college and life after high school. Annually, they participated in a leadership conference retreat.
