Chapter History

 Germany Alumnae

The West Germany-West Berlin Alumnae Chapter Of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was organized by Wilhelmina Santiful In 1979 in Heidelberg, Germany.  Fourteen ladies signed the charter request application for the chapter on April 22, 1979.  Ten years later, when reunification of East and West Germany Occurred in 1989, the original chapter name was deemed inappropriate and National Headquarters concurred with the chapter wishes for a name change to Germany Alumnae Chapter.

Germany Alumnae Chapter’s public service commitments support the National Five Point Thrust Program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated: Educational Development, Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement, International Awareness and Involvement.

Our past and present chapter projects include: annual scholarship contributions, voter registration drives, School America (a special reading program for children), support of annual Special Olympics activities, participation in German-American partnership activities, sponsorship of Sickle Cell screening projects, Delteens mentorship project, military health fairs, support of the NAACP and Germany based Pan-Hellenic group activities, and our annual sisterhood retreats.  The annual retreat is designed to inspire greater commitment to our Sisterhood.

More recently, we endorsed Delta’s International Day of Service with an open forum discussion on the HIV-Aids epidemic and reinforced this with workshops for our chapter members and Delteens.  We are especially proud of a unique meeting the chapter sponsored, our “April in Paris” meeting 2001, where sorors from the states joined us for a regular meeting and weekend tour of Paris.

Fundraisers are the sole means of financing our scholarship program.  The two major fundraisers are the Sweetheart Scholarship Ball held in February and the Greek Show in September.  These provide the means for rewarding annual scholarships to deserving graduating seniors within the DODDS-Europe school system in Germany, Belgium, Holland and Italy military communities.  Yearly, eligible DoDDS students are recipients of our chapter scholarships in awards totaling over $25,000.00 this past year.

The chapter thrives by area activities hosted by clusters of our membership throughout our service area – Germany, Belgium, Holland, and Italy. The chapter grows by infusing new ideas from sorors who transfer from chapters from many different chapters in the United States.  We benefit from the varied talents, abilities, and experiences that constantly come our way.

Daley-79Since chartering, the following distinguished guests have visited our chapter functions: Past National Presidents Mona H. Bailey and Dr. Thelma T. Daley, National Chaplain Vashti Murphy McKenzie, and Eastern Regional Directors Gwendolyn Boyd and Guessippina Bonner.

These sorority members are located throughout Germany either assigned to the military, working for the government, or working for American companies abroad. Wuerzburg, Heidelberg, Kaiserslautern and Frankfurt are the four major areas where sorors are located. They culminate to one location for monthly meetings and continue their work for DELTA.
